Everything you want to know about hair extensions

Sometimes, you want to know how it will feel like having long hair for just a day or two, or need a fancy updo for a performance but your current bob cut won’t allow you to do that. In either of these scenarios and in many others you can turn to hair extensions for a quick solution. Hair extensions are also called as hair integrations and add length and volume to natural hair. They are made of natural or synthetic hair with the former being much more expensive. Natural hair extensions are well-preserved and are set to flow in the same direction which makes it look natural. Synthetic hair extensions require less maintenance when compared to natural ones but they do not withstand heat or styling and they get tangled very often.

Types of hair extensions
There are various types of hair extensions. Some of them are:

  • Clip-in hair extensions:  Clip-in hair extensions are made up of strands of contoured pieces with fabric or silicone attached at the base. There are clips attached to the base of these extensions which do not require the help of a hair stylist and can be added easily at home. This type of hair extension causes less damage to hair and can be maintained easily by brushing them regularly and washing them after a few wears. Depending on the use and care they last for 3-6 months.
  • Tape-in hair extensions:  As the name depicts, tape-in hair extensions are taped and glued to natural hair with the help of a heating tool. It is advisable to get this procedure done at a salon with the help of a professional hairdresser. Styling is normal as it is made with human hair. It normally lasts for 4- 8 weeks. Hairdressers advise using special hair products to keep the glue intact.
  • Sew-in hair extensions/weave:  Weave hair is extensions attached to normal hair after braiding. These extensions are sewed into the braid with the help of needle and thread. The tight application of these extensions makes the wearer feel uncomfortable and works well only on individuals with thick hair. Only a professional or experienced hairdresser can sew it in as it is very complicated. When you use a weave-in hair extension, it is essential to moisturize the scalp, the nape and the edges of the hair once in 7 days. It is also advised to use special protein shampoo to minimize damage. It is safe to keep your hair free from extensions for 1 or 2 months before the next sitting as it causes severe damage.
  • Microlink hair extensions:  This method is done by attaching a bundle of hair to a small section on natural hair with the help of silicone lined beads. This process requires a special tool which helps in keeping the beads intact. This is a tricky process which needs the help of an experienced hair professional.
  • Hot/cold fusion hair extensions:  In this method, a hair professional glues a small bunch of hair with the help of hot or cold glue. This process can be done by professional hairdressers only. Most often these kinds of extensions are not preferred by hairstylists as it causes severe hair damage to hair and roots. It can last for about 4 months.
